I found a fix for this addon in Celestia 1.6.1. All you have to do is open up the .ssc file and set the RotationOffset of both of the square areas to 15. There you go, now the surface features are properly aligned with the ground.
However, you should probably delete or comment out the copy of Mars included in the .ssc file, so that you don't have two copies of Mars in Celestia.

Would love to add this, but for 1.6 it appears to still not work. :-(

No compatibility with v.1.6!! Thank you for the report (#5). Indeed the wrong orientation appears with Celestia version 1.6! The add-on is compatible only with Celestia version 1.5 => I'll report the bug to the forums. Boxx

i installed it and it got placed like a piece of paper sticking out of the surface of mars at a 30 degree or so angle

Great add on. The attention to detail is impressive. The hunt for the 'secret' is quite a challenge. It beat me and I required tips from the creator.
