To respond to the first anon post, I would think this impact is probably immediate - as in it just happened. But really, seeing as this is fictional you are free to let your imagination wander it think of how it happened and when. I personally think that it looks like it's been about few centuries and the moon has drifted close to the earth. I figure what happens next is it collides with earth and causes a massive explosion, and in time creates a whole nother planet.

This is fictional, and the title did describe a monsterous impact, but it kinda makes you wonder what hit it in the first place...

The lunar gravity although weak, would have made the moon round again. How long has it been since the impact? The crater is too deep.
